Chemical Admixtures for Concrete, Third Edition

Chemical Admixtures for Concrete, Third Edition
By: Roger Rixom, Noel Mailvaganam
Chemical Admixtures for Concrete, Third Edition Summary:
Chemical admixtures are used in concrete mixtures to produce engineering properties such as rapid hardening, water-proofing or resistance to cold. Chemical Admixtures for Concrete surveys recent developments in admixture technology, explaining the mechanisms by which admixtures produce their effects and the various admixtures available, their selection and use. Chemical Admixtures for Concrete pays particular attention to good practice and includes a detailed chapter on the international standards currently in force. This new edition is fully updated and revised with an entirely new chapter on admixtures for special applications. It is a valuable practical guide for civil engineers, consultants, contractors, cement and concrete suppliers and industrial chemists.

Concrete in the Marine Environment
Concrete in the Marine Environment
By P.K. Mehta
ISBN: 978-1-85166-622-5
Binding: Hardback
Published by: Routledge
Publication Date: 03/12/1991
Pages: 224
Concrete in the Marine Environment Summary:
Concrete has clearly emerged as the most economical and durable material for the building of the vast majority of marine structures. Reinforced concrete too has overcome the technological problems making it a suitable material for the construction of advanced marine structures such as offshore drilling platforms, superspan bridges and undersea tunnels. As the world becomes increasingly ocean-oriented for energy and other resources it is predicted that construction activities during the 21st century will be dominated by concrete sea structures.
The performance of concrete in the marine environment is presented here in a logical manner giving state-of-the-art reviews of the nature of the marine environment, the composition and properties of concrete, history of concrete performance in seawater, major causes of deterioration of concrete in the marine environment, selection of materials and mix proportioning for durable concrete, recommended concrete practice and repair of deteriorated marine structures. It is of value to any design or construction engineer responsible for marine structures.

Polymers in concrete
Title
Polymers in concrete, 1994
Publisher
Concrete Society
Camberley, UK
Abstract
The use of polymers in mortar and concrete mixes produces similar materials to conventional ordinary Portland cement-bound concretes. All or part of the cement content is replaced by polymers - synthetic resins of high molecular weight. The polymer imposes the characteristics of the concrete, most notably its mechanical properties and chemical resistance. Polymers have been in use for over 25 years, but it is only in the last decade that they have become of commercial significance. This Technical Report provides a review of the types of polymer and the methods of using them in concrete.

Engineered Concrete Mix Design and Test Methods
Engineered Concrete Mix Design and Test Methods (Concrete Technology Series) (Paperback)
Product Description
The Romans used an early type of concrete made with natural pozzuolanic cement more than 2,000 years ago. Today, Portland Cement Concrete is the most important material of construction. Yet few books, if any, exist that offer an in-depth analysis of the mixing and testing methods of this vital hydraulic cement. Until now that is. Engineered Concrete: Mix Design and Test Methods helps engineers, as well as laboratory technicians, grasp a better understanding of Portland Cement and Portland Cement Concrete. The book is divided into several sections, with the first, Mix Design Procedures, explaining how concrete batches are designed, mixed, and measured for various consistencies. Another section details the tests of the primary component materials of concrete other than water - namely Portland Cement, aggregates, and mortar - while the final section includes some of the fundamental concrete testing procedures for different strength parameters in conformity with the standards of the American Society for Testing Materials. While focusing solely on Portland Cement, the book also includes information on other hydraulic cementitious materials and additives because of their modern applications. Solidly researched and written, Engineered Concrete: Mix Design and Test Methods provides a clear understanding of mix design and testing of Portland Cement Concrete. As every civil engineer knows, it is the most versatile and important material of construction, and will probably remain so as far into the future as we can see.
Book Info

Failed Stone : Problems and Solutions with Concrete and Masonry
Failed Stone: Problems and Solutions with Concrete and Masonry (Paperback)
Product Description
Concrete and stone seem made to last forever. But the fact is they develop problems. It is not always as dramatic as the collapse of a section of the roof of the Paris Charles de Gaulle airport in 2004. Gradual changes also occur that may compromise the appearance and structural soundness of buildings constructed with these materials. These changes can be created by efflorescence, thermal stress, weathering, leakage and corrosion.
This book explains how to avoid typical kinds of failure. With this in mind, it systematically analyzes cases of damage in contemporary international architecture. It also offers strategies for minimizing the risk of damage. Examples include such high-visibility structures as Finlandia Hall in Helsinki, Parco della Musica in Rome and Vontz Center for Molecular Studies in Cincinnatti. In eight chapters, typical kinds of damage are explained and illustrated with examples.
About the Author
Patrick Loughran is an architect and engineer and has worked as a façade designer in Chicago since 1994. His book Falling Glass: Problems and Solutions in Contemporary Architecture analyzes damage and defects of glass facades and was also published by Birkhäuser.
